The office of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) is at the apex of the NA structure. It exists under his command, to deter all forms of aggression and render MACA and MACP. Section 18(3) of the Armed Forces Act CAP A20
Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, saddles the COAS with the responsibility of command, direction and general superintendence of the Army.

Army Transformation and Innovation Centre (ATIC) organized the first NA Transformation seminar from 20 – 24 May 2013 at Army Headquarters Command Officers’ Mess Asokoro, Abuja. The purpose of the seminar was to stimulate discussions on efficient and effective personnel management as a way of enhancing the current NA drive towards increased performance. The theme of the seminar was, “Building Capacity of the NA to meet Contemporary Challenges.” Lectures on topical and contemporary issues were delivered by erudite resource persons as well as serving and retired NA senior officers. The participants were drawn from Army Headquarters Departments, Corps Headquarters, Tri - Service Training Institutions, Depot Nigerian Army Guards Brigade as well as Nigerian Navy and Nigerian Airforce.
